태양의 자화상(2016)

​

  기존의 사진재료가 아닌 나뭇잎, 풀잎, 해조류 등 일반 사물을 필름으로 카메라에 넣고 

태양을 촬영하는 비은염 사진 작업을 통해 지구상 모든 것들은 빛에 반응하는 광감재이며, 

지구의 현상은 태양 빛으로 그려지는 하나의 커다란 그림, 즉 사진(photo- 빛,-graph 드로잉)임을 보인다.

  미술과 세상을 '사진'으로 새롭게 정의하는 행위를 통해 기존 사진의 개념을 확장하고 

더 나아가 세상에 대한 새롭고 다양한 정의의 가능성을 보이고자 한다.

  사진은 크게 ‘은염 사진’과 ‘비은염 사진’으로 나뉜다.

은염 사진은 ‘은’이 빛에 반응하여 검게 변하는 현상을 이용해 상의 음영을 기록하는 사진이고,

비은염 사진은 은이 아닌 다른 물질을 빛에 반응하는 ‘광감재’로 쓰는 사진이다.

사진발명 이후 사진 산업 전체에서 은염사진이 절대적으로 많이 쓰였기 때문에 ‘은염’ 사진, ‘비은염’ 사진이라는 표현이 있는 것이다.

하지만 디지털 카메라의 보급과 프린팅 기술의 발전으로 더 이상 은염사진이 주가 아니게 되었다.

  단시간에 대형 회화를 그려내는 지인의 작품을 보고 ‘사진’ 같다는 생각이 들었다.

왜 그럴까 싶어 작가의 작업과정을 생각해보았다.

작가가 그리는 것은 작가의 머리 속에 그려진 이미지일 것이다. 

그 이미지는 그전에 살아오면서 본 것들의 조합 또는 변형일 것이다. 

작가가 선천적인 맹인이었다면 그 어떤 이미지도 머리 속에 있지 않았을 것이다. 

작가의 표현도 많은 시간, 눈에 익혀진 붓질과 재료의 특성에 의한 것이다. 

본다는 것은 사물에 반사된 빛에 의한 것이다. 

단순히 말하면 작가의 작품은 빛에 대한 작가의 반응인 것이다. 

작가를 ‘은’을 대신하는 아주 복잡한 단계의 생화학적인 비은염 광감재라고 한다면

그가 그린 작품은 비은염 사진이라고 할 수 있다는 생각이 들었다.

  사실 조형예술의 모든 매체는 비은염 사진 또는 약간의 은염 사진이라는 생각이 들었다.

  

   도심 속 고층빌딩 사이 인공적으로 잘 꾸며진 공원에서 산책을 하다가 아름답다는 생각이 들었다.

문득, 이 모든 것은 빛에 의해 그려지는 현상 같다는 생각이 들었다.

꽃과 풀, 나무는 물론이고, 이런 환경을 만들 수 있는 인류 문명은 태양 빛에 의한 것이라는 생각이 들었다.

지구에 생명현상이 빛에 의해 시작 된 이후, 많은 시간 동안 거듭된 진화, 그리고 지식과 기술의 축적으로 인류 문명은 발전해왔다.

이는 절대적으로 태양으로부터의 빛 에너지의 공급에 의해 가능했다.

태양빛 공급이 끊긴다면 순식간에 모든 것은 사라질 것이다.

 

​  마치 지구의 현상들은 태양 빛에 의해 그려지는 그림(Photo 빛 + graph 드로잉= photograph 빛으로 그린 그림) 즉 사진 같다는 생각이 들었다. 

 

  그런데 기존의 고정된 사진들과는 달리 ‘정착’되지 않은 사진 같다는 생각이 들었다.

사진의 정착에 대해 생각해 보았다. 근데 사진은 바랜다. 사진이 발명되고 보급된 지 200년이 지나지 않았다. 천년 만년 지나 보지 않았다.

확실히 수 억년 후까지는 기존의 그 어떤 형식의 사진도 남아있지 않을 것이라는 생각이 들었다.

사실 극미시안적으로 본다면 기존의 모든 사진들도 계속 조금씩 변하고 있을 것이다. 

‘정착’은 사진을 정의하는 절대적인 요소가 아니라는 생각이 들었다.

그리고 한편 지구의 현상들도 계속 변하기는 하지만 형태가 있는 이 정도면 정착이라고 할 수 있다.

 

  지구의 현상은 태양으로부터의 빛(photo-)에 의해 그려지는(-graph) 하나의 커다란 사진이다. 그 피사체는 태양이다.

 

  태양이 빛으로 지구에 그리는 자화상이다.

    I aim to present the Earth’s phenomena as photography (photo- light-, graphy- drawing in Greek) through the non-silver photographic process.

The non-silver photography uses objects such as leaves and dried algae in replacement of the film.  Every single existence is photosensitive in this process.

​

   By redefining art and the world as ‘photography’, I expect the current definition of photography to expand and be able to present new and more colorful ways in marking the world. 

 

   In big, photography can be categorized into silver photography and non-silver photography.

The silver photography uses the trait of silver turning black when exposed to light to capture the image.

The non-silver photography uses objects other than silver as the ‘photosensitive material’.

The expression silver and non-silver photography comes from the history of photography, silver photography holding a large majority,

but since the invention of the digital camera and progress of the printing  technique, silver photography is no longer the main stream.

 

I thought of ‘photography’ while watching my friend create a large painting in a short amount of time.

Why? I traced back the art-making process to find the answer.

 

What the artist paints is an image the artist already has in his brain.

The image is a combination or modification of what the artist has seen before.

If the artist was born blind, that person will have no image left in the brain.

The expression of the artist relies on the familiar brushstrokes and characteristic of the material that has been exposed to the artist’s eyes for a time.

Seeing happens by light reflecting on the object.

   To simplify, the artist’s work is reaction to light.

 

   If I can call the artist a very complicated, multi-leveled, and biochemical non-silver photographic material, the artwork would be the non-silver photography. My thoughts stretched to that all of visual arts are in fact non-silver photography plus a little bit of silver photography.

 

   I realized my surroundings quite beautiful while taking a walk at an artificial park in midst of the skyscrapers.

The world was drawn by the light. Flowers, leaves, trees……..not only the nature, but also the history of mankind benefits from the Sun.

Ever since the first life started walking on this planet, the mankind has evolved through centuries accumulating knowledge and technology.

It was all possible by virtue of the sunlight energy. Everything will all disappear in blink of an eye without it.

 

   All the wonder seemed like photography, a drawing done by the sunlight.

But they aren’t ‘fixed’ as the original photography.

However, when you start thinking of the term ‘fix’, even the original photos are actually not pinned down.

Photos fade. It has not yet been millions of years since the invention of photography. It has not even been two full centuries.

No form of photography will be left after a significant amount of time.

All the photos are going through change even now if you look at it via the ultra-microscopic perspective.

‘Fixing’ is no longer a definite to delineate what photography is.

And even though the earth also shifts now and then, I would call it ‘fixed’ with the current amount of consistency.  

 

The Earth is a photography drawn by the sunlight. The subject is the Sun.
